Make A Plan
This concept project is an interactive scenario-based eLearning course that teaches GOTV volunteers to speak with voters and help them construct detailed voting plans.
The Problem
A Congressional campaign relies heavily on volunteer canvassers to speak with voters to get out the vorte.
Research has shown that helping voters create detailed voting plans can significantly increase voter turnout. However, many volunteers are inexperienced or uncomfortable talking to voters.
The Objective
By the end of this course, volunteers will be able to:
Walk voters through the steps of creating a detailed voting plan
Explain why creating voting plans is important
Recommend voting options based on voters' needs
The Solution
We will create a mobile-responsive course that volunteers can complete on their own time. During the course, participants will learn the steps of creating a voting plan, learn tips for engaging with voters, and practice these skills in relatable scenarios. Because participants are volunteers and we do not want to discourage anyone from volunteering, this training will not be mandatory.
The Process
Needs Analysis
I began by consulting with an SME (Subject Matter Expert). He said that helping voters make voting plans is one of the most effective ways of increasing voter turnout. However, many volunteers feel awkward or intrusive speaking with voters and asking them questions about their voting plan. We decided that an interactive scenario-based course would help volunteers to practice in a no-stakes environment.
Design Document
I created a design document laying out the plan for the course. I recommended that we create a mobile-responsive course that volunteers could complete on the go. I also recommended that we include interactive scenarios so that volunteers could practice applying the Make A Plan method.
SME Consultation
I consulted again with the SME on the details of the voting plan method.
Storyboard
I created a storyboard to map out the eLearning experience. As the learner goes through the scenario, each option proposes two potential questions or statements that the volunteer can say. If they choose the correct response, they will continue .
Visual Design
I used PowerPoint to create custom border and dividers for the project.
The Project
Finally, I used Articulate Storyline 360 to bring the project to life. I went through several rounds of testing and refinements. I added the "star" icons so that learners could keep track of their score during the experience. At the end of the experience, the learner is presented with their interview notes, which contain the information they were able to successfully gather.
