Behavioral Interviewing
This concept project is an interactive scenario-based eLearning course that teaches hiring managers to evaluate candidates' soft skills using behavioral interviewing techniques.
The Problem
Hiring managers must interview candidates for their departments, but are not trained HR professionals.
This is a problem because they are not trained to assess soft skills or to avoid illegal questions.
The Objective
While interviewing candidates, managers will ask behavioral questions and follow-up questions using the STAR method to accurately assess candidates’ soft skills.
The Solution
This course will teach managers about the concept of behavioral questions, which ask a candidate to describe how they handled a type of situation in the past. This will be done by briefly defining behavioral questions and explaining their utility. Then learners will go through an interactive scenario where they choose which questions to ask a candidate.
The Process
Needs Analysis
I began by designing a series of questions to determine whether training was necessary and, if so, what training would be appropriate. I then designed to a series of target population analysis questions to gather information about the prospective learner population.
Design Document
I created a design document in presentation form to lay out the plan for the project.
Prototype
I used the interactive storytelling tool Twine to create a low-fidelity prototype of the interview simulation. I used this prototype to test and refine the simulation.
Mock-Ups
I used Adobe XD to design the slide layouts. After choosing a color palette and sourcing vector images, I began designing the main slide types. I went through an iterative process to refine the mockups before bringing the project into Storyline.
Storyboard
I created a visual storyboard to map out the eLearning experience. As the learner goes through the scenario, each option proposes three potential questions that the interviewer can ask. If they choose a behavioral question, they will receive additional information from the candidate about the situation the candidate is describing. Otherwise, they will receive a generic or unhelpful response.
The Project
Finally, I used Articulate Storyline 360 to bring the project to life. I went through several rounds of testing and refinements. I added the "star" icons so that learners could keep track of their score during the experience. At the end of the experience, the learner is presented with their interview notes, which contain the information they were able to successfully gather.
